Ground water section

 The Groundwater Section is separated into two units namely:   Groundwater Research and Monitoring Unit and Groundwater Resources Development Unit whose main functions are:

  •  a) Reconnaissance, prospecting, exploration and exploitation of the resource;
  •  b) Setting up a network of continuous monitoring of groundwater functions;   and
  •  c) Production of various groundwater periodicals and parameters on   groundwater availability, suitability and vulnerability.

Projects currently under this section include:

  • Groundwater Resources for Southern Province (GReSP) supported by BGR Germany, whose main objective is to fulfil the urgent need for ground water resources assessment in southern province. It aims at strengthening the capacities of water sector in Zambia with special emphasis to the field of groundwater by compiling a database and hydrogeological  maps
  • Rural Water Supply for Eastern Province supported by JBG, Germany whose
  • Isotope Hydrology supported by the International Atomic Energy Agency(IAEA)

Groundwater Resources Development Unit

  • Installation and maintenance of observation equipment;
  • Development of both exploratory and production boreholes;
  • Co-ordination of groundwater development programmes;
  • Render technical advice to organisations involved in the provision of groundwater supplies.

Groundwater  Research and Monitoring Unit

  • Design of a network of continuous and comprehensive monitoring and assessment of ground water resources availability through research.
  • Provision for up to date information and Groundwater resources  for effective planning, development, management and utilisation of Groundwater resources.
  • Planning and implementation of hydro geological programmes in line with government policy;
  • Recommendation of regulations and guidelines that will ensure the protection of Groundwater resources from pollution and over- exploitation;
  • Co-ordination of Donor Funded Groundwater Projects;
  • Carryout geo-physical surveys for location of drilling sites.
