This statement serves to inform the general public and fuel consumers that the Indeni Petroleum Refinery will go on its planned annual maintenance shutdown from midnight of 1st October, 2016 to 14th November, 2016.
As you are aware, the Ministry of Energy and Water Development imports diesel and petrol to supplement the production of the Indeni refinery. Therefore, in preparation for the shutdown, the Ministry has put in place mechanisms to ensure that the supply of fuel in the country will not in any way be disrupted as a consequence of the refinery shutdown. To this effect, we are building sufficient fuel stocks to last the period of the refinery shutdown and beyond.
With regard to aviation fuel (Jet A1), the Oil Marketing Companies who sell the product will, as of now, continue to import for their customers. As of 25th August, 2016, the available national stock levels for diesel is 35 days, petrol is 35 days and kerosene is 61 days. We are currently, above the target of having 25 days of stock for diesel and 20 days for petrol. Kindly note that we are still receiving product from Indeni Refinery and the imports.
Other than inform the nation about the 2016 annual Indeni Shutdown, this statement is also meant as an appeal to local fuel bulk suppliers and retailers to ensure that all measures are taken to avoid disruptions in supply. Government will not take kindly to any entity that will neglect to do its part in ensuring that fuel supply continues to run smoothly in the whole country.
As has been in the past, the Ministry appeals to all fuel bulk suppliers, retailers and consumers to go about their business without any anxiety or panic. Members of the public should feel free to contact the Ministry or the Energy Regulation Board where clarifications are required. I thank all in anticipation for cooperation.
